The Careers & Enterprise Company to launch Digital Careers Day and is looking for hosts

1st. April 2019

Digital Careers Day - Thursday 20th. June 2019

The City of London Corporation is coordinating a major event to promote pathways into careers and the world of work for young people. The Careers & Enterprise Company's new Digital Careers Day initiative is part of the Lord Mayor of London’s ‘Tomorrow’s Cities Today’ mayoral initiative and is designed to connect young people and employers by organising 40+ companies to host and run sessions for school students on Thursday 20th. June 2019 at locations across London. These sessions will be opportunities to expose young people to the various professions that involve the use of IT skills and to inspire them to pursue a career using digital skills. As IT skills are used across many sectors, Digital Careers Day will see representation from a range of industries as well as the technology sector.

Digital Careers Day is a part of the wider London Careers Festival for Primary and Secondary pupils which is running throughout the week commencing Monday 17th. June 2019. It aims to give young people a taster of the rich variety of careers available for them in and around The City.

The Careers & Enterprise Company is looking for potential hosts, and is asking companies to deliver, at their own premises, a 1 or 2-hour session for 20-30+ young people. Companies with smaller offices and staffing should get in touch with The Careers & Enterprise Company to see if their session offer can be tailored appropriately. The session should include a chance for young people to see and interact with some pieces of technology used by the company. Colleagues (particularly those from diverse backgrounds to promote inclusive role models) can talk about:

  • What their jobs involve

  • What other roles are available in the business

  • Some routes of entry into these jobs i.e. apprenticeship schemes, graduate schemes, entry-level positions

  • What particular skills, personal qualities and qualifications should a young person exhibit in order to make them an ideal candidate

For each host company, this is an opportunity to gain some invaluable free PR for their organisation, as well as joining the ranks of Microsoft, PwC, Founders Forum, WeWork, HS2, Barclays and many others in supporting this very worthwhile initiative to give young people the best possible chance at starting an exciting career using technology skills. It could also be a good opportunity for your business to engage with the wider community, may align to your organisation’s corporate social responsibility programmes, and will provide strong learning and development opportunities for your staff. Each company which hosts a session on 20th. June can decide:

  • How many pupils they could host

  • What ages the session might be best suited for (there will be pupils from the ages of 9-18 taking part in the Digital Careers Day)

  • What the session will entail

  • Session timings (any time between 10.30am - 3.30pm on 20th. June)

The City of London Corporation will then advertise the session offer on its London Careers Festival platform and teachers will book places for their students. Please note that schools will be taking full responsibility for all safeguarding for pupils so host companies can focus on delivering their sessions. Session allocations are limited and will be offered on a ‘first come’ basis so it is strongly recommended that you register your interest ASAP.

For more details and to register your interest for hosting a session for young people, please contact Chris Oldham via 020 7332 3342 / 0795 662 9596 / Chris.Oldham@cityoflondon.gov.uk
