Work Experience Month 2017

Fair Train created Work Experience Week in 2013. It was an opportunity to raise the profile and celebrate the benefits of Work Experience and to encourage young people, employers, providers and facilitators to share their experiences and opportunities through social media and national and local events.

It went from strength to strength and the first ever National Work Experience Conference launched Work Experience Week 2016. In 2017, we expanded the project to Work Experience Month.

Hundreds of thousands of people now connect about work experience via social media in Work Experience Month, and before and after it. This reinforces one of the core purposes of Work Experience Month, which is organisations up and down the country celebrating their activities and learning from and inspiring each other. Just two examples of this from Work Experience Month 2017, and demonstrating the range, were the Open Day staged by Torbay Hospital - when more than 300 students were given a taste of radiotheraphy, IT and physiotherapy, as well as nursing and the roles of the paramedic - and the extraordinary reach achieved by British Airways in just this one week of its year-round programme. Its impact report makes for very interesting reading:

Work Experience Month 2018 will address the other core purpose of Work Experience Month which is to raise awareness and appreciation of all that is being done, all round the country, in all forms of work-based learning.

The Expert Sessions

"Brilliant engaging conference!"

(Manchester – Michelle Tomlin, Employment and Skills Manager, First Homes Oldham)

The biggest innovation yet, the key development in Work Experience Month 2017, was incorporating not one but five events in the period.

Called The Expert Sessions, they took place in Manchester, London (Heathrow), Bristol, Plumpton (near Brighton) and Wolverhampton. These half-day conferences explored many key aspects of Work Experience, including, for example, bringing together representatives of employers and those of learning/training providers to debate in depth what each needs from the other to ensure a really successful placement. These were very popular elements in the conferences.

The range and quality of content, and our innovations, produced feedback that was not just very complimentary, with overall appreciation ratings up to 92%, but also very useful in helping us to shape future Expert Sessions conferences and seminars. Just a few of the many feedback comments received were:

"It is so important to focus on excellent practice. An inspiring and motivating forum."

(Midlands – Laura Jane Rawlings, CEO, Youth Employment UK)

"Well presented and professional session with relevant guest speakers from different areas of work experience to give different perspectives." (Manchester)

"Every presentation given held relevance and a great lesson to be learnt / good practice."

(London – Alison Jones, Richmond upon Thames College)

"Bringing employers and the education sector together with one common aim of outstanding work experience is just so worthwhile."

(London – Linda Fenn, Head of Volunteering, BHF)

"Really good mix of experienced speakers and opportunity to discuss both current and future work experience environment." (Bristol).

"Liked the variety and the mix of presenters. An interesting and valuable conference." (Plumpton)

"Fantastic insight into what is on offer and supporting those undertaking work experience. Wonderful to see how work experience has significantly impacted on someone’s life."

(Tracy Newbold, Pre-employment Advisor, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust)

The 2017 Work Experience Month Expert Sessions events would not have been possible without the support of our very generous sponsors, to whom we are extremely grateful:
